Opera North takes music off the stage and out into the streets of Hull this November, with an animated act from Puccini’s La bohème projected outdoors in three locations in the city, presented in association with Absolutely Cultured and supported by Wykeland Group.
Part of the Leeds-based company’s innovative Switch ON season, programmed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, La petite bohème is an inventive take on the third act of Puccini’s tragic opera.
In the frozen streets of Paris, two pairs of lovers sing of their jealousy, passion and desire. Once madly in love, bohemians Rodolfo and Mimì have fallen on hard times: Mimì’s illness is getting worse and Rodolfo is tormented to the point of madness by her suffering. Can their love survive the harsh winter?
The 20-minute animation will be projected onto walls and buildings at three Hull locations including in the car park of the recently revamped Social bar (formerly Fruit), behind Humber Street, with refreshments available to buy on site from the Humber Street Gallery Café team. Screenings take place on Thursday 26th November, at 5pm, 6pm, 7pm and 8pm.

Audience members will be required to wear face coverings at the screenings unless excused for reasons of age, health or disability, and audiences will be socially-distanced throughout.
